Waterproofing membranes, explained honestly
Every waterproofer says they use 'premium membranes'. Here's what the words actually mean, how the systems compare, and exactly what we put on your building.
What a waterproofing membrane is
A waterproofing membrane is the continuous barrier that keeps water out of a structure: a sheet or coating applied over roofs, balconies, basements and wet areas. Every membrane on the market is a trade-off between thickness, seam strength, durability, cure time and cost. Knowing the trade-offs is the difference between a system that lasts 20+ years and one that fails in three.
The three families
Torch-on bitumen membrane
Modified bitumen sheet, melted onto the substrate with a propane torch. Thickest system on the market at 3 to 4mm per two-layer install, with heat-welded seams and no cure time. Best for exposed roofs, balconies, podiums, planters and below-ground tanking. Its weakness: it demands real skill and hot-works discipline, so the installer matters more than the brand. This is our specialty and our namesake.
Liquid-applied membrane
Polyurethane or acrylic rolled or trowelled on, curing into a seamless film around 1 to 2mm thick. Excellent for complex details and internal wet areas. Its weakness: thickness depends entirely on the hand applying it, and most failures are simply membrane applied too thin, then rushed between coats.
Sheet membranes (self-adhesive and PVC/TPO)
Factory-made thickness, consistent quality, no flame required. Their weakness is the seams: lapped and glued or hot-air welded, and every one of them is a future failure point if rushed. Right answer in some specs, and where it is, we'll say so.
The brands we install
We install six manufacturers and no one else: SOPREMA, Sika, Ardex, Enduroflex, Fatra and Bayset. They're the membranes whose manufacturers back long warranties, 20+ years, and honour them, because the warranty is only as good as the company standing behind the roll. Cheap membrane saves a few hundred dollars on install day and costs a re-waterproof inside a decade. We don't fit it.
Installed to warranty spec, not cheap spec
Here's the industry's quiet secret: the same membrane can carry a 10-year or 20+ year warranty depending on how it's installed: layer count, primer, detailing, terminations. Manufacturers only honour warranties on installations done to their full specification. Ours are. That's what 'permanent, not patched' means in practice.

Straight answers
What's the best waterproofing membrane?
The one matched to the job and installed to spec. For exposed roofs, trafficable decks, planters and below-ground work, two-layer torch-on bitumen is the most durable system available. For internal wet areas and complex detailing, liquid membranes win. Anyone who names one product for every job is selling what's in their van.
How thick should a waterproofing membrane be?
A two-layer torch-on system finishes at 3 to 4 millimetres. Liquid membranes are specified around 1 to 2 millimetres dry, and most liquid failures are simply coats applied too thin. Thickness is the cheapest insurance in the trade, which is why we start from the thickest system on the market.
Are manufacturer warranties actually worth anything?
Only if the installation followed the manufacturer's full specification, which is the part most installers skip. We install to spec, register the warranty on completion and give you the paperwork. Twenty-plus years, in writing, from companies big enough to still exist in year nineteen.
