Waterproofing Eastern Suburbs
Salt air, ocean-facing balconies and some of the most valuable ceilings in Australia underneath them. The east is where waterproofing shortcuts get exposed fastest, and cost the most.
Waterproofing in Eastern Suburbs
From Bondi and Bronte through Coogee, Maroubra, Rose Bay, Double Bay and Vaucluse, the Eastern Suburbs combine three things that kill cheap waterproofing: salt-laden air that corrodes fixings and eats unprotected details, direct ocean weather that drives rain sideways into every junction, and apartment stock where a leaking balcony means damage to the unit below before anyone notices.
Balconies are the east's defining waterproofing job. Ocean-facing terraces take UV and salt spray year round, and the original membranes under their tiles were rarely specced for it. We strip them back, torch on two-layer bitumen systems detailed by hand at thresholds and balustrade posts, flood test, and reinstate finishes to the standard the postcode expects.
We also handle rooftop terraces, plant decks and remedial work for eastern strata buildings, with the paperwork, photo documentation, staged access, defect-report quoting, that strata committees and managing agents need to sign off with confidence.
Whatever the building, the process is the same: an inspection with photos, a fixed itemised quote, two-layer torch-on installed to manufacturer spec, flood testing where it counts, and a warranty in writing. Not sure what you're looking at? Our guides on waterproofing costs and choosing a contractor are a good place to start.

Someone waterproofed it once and it failed.
See the work 04Planter box waterproofing
A planter box is a rooftop garden bed with your ceiling underneath it: permanently wet soil, roots hunting for weaknesses, and fertiliser eating cheap membranes.

Asked locally
Does salt air really affect waterproofing?
Directly. Salt attacks membrane terminations, fixings and exposed detailing, and coastal UV degrades under-specced systems years early. On ocean-facing work we use mineral-finished cap sheets and detail terminations for coastal exposure, which is the difference between ten years and twenty-plus.
Can't afford for it to leak twice?
